Pull out your phone and run the search your customers run every day. Your service, your city. Now look at what shows up at the very top – the map with three businesses pinned on it. If you’re not one of those three, I’ve got bad news: you’re basically invisible to the people most ready to book you for a job.
And here’s the part most owners miss. The map pack is not random. Google is not flipping a coin. It’s not playing favorites with the biggest company or the oldest company in town. Google is scoring your business profile based on a long list of factors – and the wild part is that most of them are things you completely control. Your photos. Your categories. Your reviews. Even how fast and how detailed you are when you reply to those reviews.
After reviewing hundreds of these profiles, I can tell you the pattern without blinking: most businesses fail four to five of the basics and have absolutely no idea. They sit there wondering why the phone slowed down, blaming the economy, blaming the season – while their Google listing quietly fails test after test. Let’s fix that.
Why the Map Pack Decides Who Gets the Call
Think about the person searching. Their AC just died in the middle of a heat wave. Water is spreading across the garage floor. They’re locked out of the house at 11pm. These are not casual browsers doing research for next month. These are the highest-intent customers a service business can possibly get – people with an urgent problem, a phone in their hand, and a decision to make in the next few minutes.
Where do they look? The map results. It’s the first thing Google puts in front of them, with ratings and a call button right there. If your business doesn’t appear in that moment, you don’t exist at the exact point it matters most. Doesn’t matter how good your work is, how long you’ve been in business, or how clean your trucks are. Invisible is invisible.
That’s why this isn’t a nice-to-have marketing channel. For a local service business, showing up in Google’s map results is often the difference between a phone that rings and a phone that doesn’t.
Google Is Scoring You – and You Control the Scorecard
Time for a mindset shift. Stop treating the map pack like a lottery and start treating it like a test you’re allowed to study for. Google is scoring your Google Business Profile on factors you control. Your ranking isn’t luck – it’s a direct reflection of how well your listing is built and maintained. Here are the big ones.
Your photos
Photos are one of the signals Google scores – and one of the first things a customer judges. A profile with a solid set of real photos tells Google there’s an active, operating business behind the listing. It tells the homeowner the same thing. A bare, empty profile says the opposite. This is fully in your control, and it’s one of the quickest wins on the list.
Your categories
Your categories tell Google what you actually do – which searches you should even be considered for. Get them wrong or leave them thin, and you’re asking Google to guess. Google doesn’t guess. It just ranks the competitor whose listing clearly states what they are. This is one of the most common failures I see when reviewing profiles, and one of the simplest to correct.
Your reviews
Reviews are a scoring factor, period. They’re also the first thing a searcher reads before tapping the call button – so reviews hit twice. They influence whether Google shows you, and they influence whether the customer picks you once you’re shown. You control this more than you think. Most businesses simply have no system for it, so their profile sits stale while a competitor’s stays fresh.
Your review replies – speed and detail
This is the one almost nobody talks about. Google scores how fast and how detailed your replies to reviews are. Not just whether you reply – how quickly, and with how much substance. A two-word “thanks” three weeks later is not the same thing as a prompt, detailed response. The owner who treats every review like a real conversation is feeding Google exactly the engagement signal it’s looking for.
The Brutal Truth From Hundreds of Profile Reviews
I’ve reviewed hundreds of these profiles. Want to know what I actually find? It’s rarely one giant catastrophic mistake. It’s a stack of small misses – four to five basic things failing at the same time. Weak categories plus no photos plus unanswered reviews plus a thin listing. Each one drags the score down a little more, and together they bury you.
The map pack is not random. Google is scoring your business profile – and most businesses are failing four to five of the basics without knowing it.
The good news? Basic fixes are basic fixes. None of this requires a marketing degree. It requires knowing what Google is scoring and then actually doing it – which is exactly why I put the checklist together.
The Free 12-Point Local SEO Checklist
I built a free local SEO checklist that covers the 12 most important things you can fix right now with your Google listing. Not theory. Not fluff. The actual items that matter, distilled from reviewing hundreds of real profiles and watching the same failures show up over and over again.
Getting it is simple: head to the video and comment “local SEO” – I’ll send it over. Then go through it line by line against your own listing. If you’re like most businesses, you’ll spot your four or five failures within minutes. Fix them, and you’ve just handed Google a reason to put you in front of the customers who are ready to book.
Want It Done For You Instead?
Maybe you read all that and thought: “I don’t want another homework assignment. I want the phone to ring.” Fair. That’s the other path. If you’d rather have a team personally help you rank your business and generate high-quality leads for your company, that’s exactly what we do at Local Service Mastery. Shoot me a message and we’ll schedule a call.
You could hand this off to any home services marketing company – but most won’t even show you what they’re fixing. We work from the same scorecard Google uses, the exact stuff you just read about. No mystery, no smoke and mirrors. We show you what’s failing, fix it with you, and build a listing that earns its spot in the map pack – so the people most ready to book actually find you.
