Rooter Hero Plumbing of Los Angeles, out of Gardena, California. A 4.8-star rating across close to 1,300 reviews. You don’t get numbers like that without taking care of people, so the work side of this business is clearly dialed in. Techs show up, problems get fixed, and customers are happy enough to write about it afterward. That part of the machine works.
The marketing wrapped around it, though, has leaks. Not the dramatic, obvious kind – the quiet kind. The kind that never show up in a monthly report but quietly cost you jobs every single week. We pulled the data: a live map scan around the shop, Google’s own speed test on the website, and a full look at the homepage. What we found is the same pattern we see in plumbing companies all over the country – a great operation propped up by reputation while the digital foundation rots underneath it. Here’s the full breakdown.
| Finding | What the audit found | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Weak local map-pack visibility (16.0% within a 5.0-mile radius) | Live Google Places search grid scan for "plumber": appears in the top-3 map pack at only 16.0% of 25 checked points around the business, average rank 7.9. | Most customers only ever see the 3-pack at the top of local search results — falling outside it across most of the checked service area means most nearby searches never surface this business at all. |
| Slow mobile site (44/100 Google PageSpeed) | Google PageSpeed mobile performance score 44/100, LCP 12.3 s. | Homeowners on phones bounce before the page loads — paid clicks included. |
| Most images missing alt text (24/47) | 24 of 47 <img> tags on the homepage have no alt attribute. | Alt text is a direct on-page SEO signal for image search — and it's what screen readers use for accessibility. |
| No video content on the homepage | No YouTube/Vimeo/Wistia embed found in the page source. | Video builds trust fastest and keeps visitors on the page longer — a homepage with zero video is a missed, low-cost opportunity. |
| YouTube channel inactive (135 months since last upload) | Their YouTube channel's most recent video was uploaded 4057 days ago. | An inactive channel signals to both viewers and Google that the business isn't actively investing in content. |
| Reviews shown but not marked up for Google | Review content on the page with no aggregateRating/review schema | Marked-up reviews can show star ratings directly in search results, which lifts click-through on a listing you already rank for — free clicks you're currently leaving behind. |
A YouTube channel that’s been silent for 11 years
The most recent upload on Rooter Hero’s YouTube channel went up 4,057 days ago. Read that again. That’s over 11 years of silence. Somebody at this company got excited about video more than a decade ago, posted, and then life happened. Trucks needed dispatching. Phones needed answering. The channel sat.
Here’s why that’s a bigger deal than it looks. Video is the single fastest way to build trust with a stranger who just found you. A homeowner deciding who to let into their house doesn’t know you from the next name on the list – and a short clip of a real tech solving a real problem closes that trust gap faster than any paragraph of website copy ever will. This is a company with over a thousand happy customers. A thousand stories. And not one of them is on film, on the channel or on the homepage.
Invisible in the map pack 84% of the time
We ran a live map scan across a five-mile radius around the shop, searching the word plumber the way a real customer would. Rooter Hero lands in that top-three map pack just 16% of the time, with an average rank of 7.9. Your Google Business Profile is what wins or loses those spots, and right now it’s losing most of the time.
Here’s why that stings. Plumbing is an emergency business. Someone with water coming through their ceiling isn’t scrolling down to result number eight and weighing their options. They tap one of the first three names and book. Which means that for the overwhelming majority of plumber searches happening within five miles of their own shop, Rooter Hero effectively doesn’t exist. The jobs are still getting booked – just by whoever happens to be sitting in those three spots.
A 12.3-second wait for a homeowner in a hurry
Google’s own speed test scores the mobile site 44 out of 100, and the main content takes 12.3 seconds to appear. On a phone – the exact device a homeowner grabs when water is coming through the ceiling.
If this were my account, that number would keep me up at night – because every paid click landing on a page that slow is money evaporating while a homeowner stands there watching a loading bar.
Think through the math. You pay for the click, the homeowner taps, the page hangs, they hit the back button, and they call the next company on the list. You still paid for that click. The job still got booked. Just not with you. A slow website doesn’t only hurt your rankings – it taxes every single marketing dollar that touches it, paid or organic.
Earning 4.8 stars Google can’t show off
This one’s quieter. Rooter Hero displays their reviews on the website, which is great – but there’s no review markup behind them. That’s the small bit of code that lets Google print star ratings directly inside the search results, right under your listing.
They’ve earned 4.8 stars the hard way – one job at a time, over years – and Google can’t show them off in the one place it matters most. When a searcher sees one listing with gold stars next to it and three without, the starred listing gets the tap. That’s free clicks left on the table, every day, on searches they’re already appearing for.
Half the homepage is invisible
Last one: 24 of the 47 images on the homepage have no alt text. Alt text is the short written description attached to each image – it’s what Google reads to understand what the picture shows, and it’s what screen readers speak aloud for visually impaired visitors. Half the page is invisible to both.
On its own, this is a quick fix. But it’s never really about one fix. Missing alt text on half your images tells you something bigger: nobody has actually looked at this website with fresh eyes in a long time.
Why this stuff gets missed
None of what we found is exotic. A dormant video channel, weak map pack coverage, a slow mobile site, missing review markup, missing alt text – these are the basics any home service marketing agency should catch in week one of an engagement. So why do they get missed, sometimes for years?
Because of how most agencies are built. The agency collects the retainer while junior staff juggle 80 accounts, and nobody actually looks. Reports go out on schedule, the dashboards stay green-ish, and the fundamentals quietly rot. The owner assumes someone is watching. Nobody is watching. That broken model is exactly why we rebuilt lead generation for local service businesses around ownership instead of retainers.
The AI shift: own the whole thing outright
Here’s what most owners don’t know yet. With AI, these exact checks – and a lot of the fixes – can now run automatically. Map scans across your service area. Speed tests. Review markup validation. Alt text audits. The work that used to require an agency analyst (who, again, was never really looking) can now run on a schedule, flag the problem, and in many cases fix it.
And with a bit of guidance, you can bring your marketing in-house and own the whole thing outright instead of depending on an agency to notice. That’s the entire premise behind Local Service Mastery – you learn to run Google Ads, local SEO, and Facebook Ads yourself, with AI doing the heavy lifting, so no junior account manager ever stands between you and your own lead flow again.
Rooter Hero has already done the hard part. Close to 1,300 people took time out of their day to say this company did right by them. The reputation is built. The only question is whether the marketing ever catches up to the work.
