Local Cleaning Services in Los Angeles. 4.9 stars, 329 reviews. By every measure that matters to a homeowner, this carpet and upholstery team is doing the real work right, people clearly love them.
Which is exactly what makes this breakdown frustrating. When we pulled apart their marketing, we found five separate leaks making a genuinely great business look ordinary, or invisible, at the precise moments when customers decide who to call. None of them are exotic. None require a bigger budget. And every single one should have been caught in month one by whoever is being paid to run this marketing.
Here’s what we found, why each leak costs them jobs, and what it tells you about the agency model most local service businesses are stuck in.
| Finding | What the audit found |
|---|---|
| Weak local map-pack visibility (4.0% within a 5.0-mile radius) | Live Google Places search grid scan for “carpet cleaning company”: appears in the top-3 map pack at only 4.0% of 25 checked points around the business, average rank 12.6. |
| Slow mobile site (36/100 Google PageSpeed) | Google PageSpeed mobile performance score 36/100, LCP 8.3 s. |
| H1 heading is not the first heading on the page | A lower-level heading (H2/H3) appears in the HTML before the page’s own H1 tag. |
| No video content on the homepage | No YouTube/Vimeo/Wistia embed found in the page source. |
| Insecure content on a secure page (1 resources) | 1 asset(s) loaded over http:// on an https:// page |
| Reviews shown but not marked up for Google | Review content on the page with no aggregateRating/review schema |
The 5 leaks hiding a 4.9-star business
1. 329 reviews at 4.9 stars, and Google can’t see any of them
The reviews are on the website. You can scroll through and read them. But there’s no review markup, that’s the behind-the-scenes code that lets Google display star ratings right in the search results.
Think about what that means. Three hundred and twenty-nine reviews at 4.9 stars, invisible at the exact place where people pick who to click. And a competitor with half the reputation can still look better in search, simply because their stars show up and yours don’t.
This is the part that should make every owner check their own site today. You can do everything right operationally, earn the reviews, leave customers happy enough to rave about you, and still lose the click to a worse company over a missing piece of code.
Quick self-check: search your main service in your area and look hard at the results. If competitors show star ratings and you don’t, this leak is probably sitting on your website too.
2. Top 3 on the map just 4% of the time
We ran a live map scan for a carpet cleaning company across a five-mile radius around their shop. They make the top three map results just 4% of the time, with an average position of 12.6.
Why does the top three matter so much? Because most searchers never look past those top three results. So across most of their own neighborhood, the closest, easiest jobs they could possibly book, this business effectively doesn’t show up at all.
3. A 36 out of 100 mobile site that loads in 8.3 seconds
Google’s own speed test scores their mobile site 36 out of 100, with the page taking 8.3 seconds to load. Eight seconds sounds short until you picture the actual customer.
Someone watching red wine soak into a white couch is not waiting eight seconds. They hit back and call the next company.
That’s the reframe most owners miss. Site speed is not a technical vanity metric for your web person to worry about someday. It’s a lead-generation metric. Every second of load time quietly converts your hard-earned reputation and your marketing spend into a phone call for a faster competitor.
4. One insecure file, one potential security warning
The site itself is secure, but one file on it loads over an insecure connection. That single file is enough for browsers to throw a security warning at visitors, or to quietly block the file from loading at all, which can break whatever part of the page depends on it.
Remember what this company is asking of its customers: let our crew inside your home. Trust is the product before the product. A security warning from the browser is the exact opposite of that, delivered at the worst possible moment, right before someone decides whether to call you or the next name on the list.
5. Zero video on the homepage
The last leak is the simplest. There is no video anywhere on the homepage. If this were my business, that’s the first thing I’d add, because nothing builds trust faster for a company asking to be let inside your home.
Reviews tell homeowners that strangers vouch for you. Video shows them who they’re actually opening the door to. For an in-home service, the gap between ‘company with good reviews’ and ‘people I’m comfortable letting in’ is exactly where bookings are won and lost.
Five leaks, and nobody caught a single one
Here’s the uncomfortable part. None of this is exotic. Review markup, map visibility, mobile speed, mixed content, homepage trust, this is month-one checklist stuff. Any agency should catch these in month one.
But most agencies I’ve seen run the same play: they collect the retainer while junior staff juggle 80 accounts, and nobody actually looks. Not at your search results, not at your map grid, not at your load time. The retainer clears every month either way.
If someone is being paid to run this marketing, they should have caught all five. Full stop. And if you’re paying a typical home service marketing agency right now, it’s worth asking one pointed question: when did you last show me my own numbers on any of these five things?
The fix isn’t a better agency. It’s never needing one again.
Here’s what most owners don’t know yet. With AI, these exact fixes can run automatically, the monitoring, the flagging, the routine corrections that retainers supposedly cover. And with a bit of guidance, you can bring your marketing in-house, own the whole thing, and never depend on an agency again.
That’s not a pitch for adding hours to your week. It’s a pitch for finally having the same visibility into your marketing that you already demand from every other part of your business, your techs, your trucks, your books.
It’s also the entire reason Local Service Mastery exists: coaching, training, and AI tooling that let service business owners run their own lead generation without an agency sitting in the middle.
