After reviewing hundreds upon hundreds of service business owners, some who worked with me, many who just came in for a consultation call, you start to see patterns. And the biggest pattern among the ones who are failing at marketing has nothing to do with what you’d expect.
It’s not that they picked the wrong agency. It’s not that they need better sales reps. The number one reason contractors and service business owners fail at marketing is much simpler, and much harder to hear: they’re not willing to put their face in front of a camera.
Crazy, right? But that’s it. They won’t create content. And that one decision quietly kills everything else they try. So let’s break down why content is the whole game, how one locksmith proved it without ever showing his face, and how AI now does everything except the one part only you can do.
Content Is the Foundation of Marketing
If you’re in construction, plumbing, remodeling, renovation, you know the importance of a foundation. Everything above it depends on what’s poured underneath. Marketing works exactly the same way: the foundation of good marketing is content.
And by good content, I don’t mean stock images. I don’t mean AI-generated filler. I mean people seeing who the business owner is. Who’s going to come into their house. Who’s going to unlock their car door at three in the morning. Who’s going to crawl under the house to fix a broken pipe. People need to know who you are, and everything else is secondary.
Here’s the part nobody wants to believe: marketing is simple. Lead generation is simple. All you need to do is show the work.
Show the freaking job. Show the work you’re doing. Show the work your technicians are doing. Show the damn work.
“But I Don’t Want to Be on Camera”, The Locksmith Story
I get the hesitation. I had a locksmith client who wanted to grow organically, and when I told him content was the easiest path to get there, he had every reason in the world why he didn’t want to be on camera. Fine. We worked around it.
The solution? A body cam. A GoPro or an Insta360 strapped on while he documented how he unlocks people’s car doors, houses, mailboxes. No face. No performance. Just the work, recorded. I showed him how to optimize it, he uploaded to his YouTube channel, and he stayed consistent with it for about two years.
Zero dollars. All organic. He never became an influencer or an entertainer, he just documented the job he already does every day, and the audience came to him. That’s what showing the work does.
You’re Not MrBeast, and Your Business Doesn’t Care
Look, not all of us are Brad Pitt or Angelina Jolie. We’re not MrBeast. But that’s what the business needs. And if you genuinely want to grow, this is what you’re going to do.
Because here’s the alternative: bitching and moaning that marketing agencies are shit. And I’ll agree with you, most of them are shit, and most have no idea what they’re doing. But that’s outside of your control. You can fire every home service marketing agency on the planet and it won’t change a thing if there’s still no content at the foundation. What’s in your control is creating content. That part is on you.
One Video Becomes an Entire Ecosystem
This is where it gets interesting. Content isn’t one post, it’s the raw material your entire marketing machine runs on. Here’s what happens with a single piece of content when the system behind it is built right:
Your landing page converts harder
The landing page becomes much more convincing. People who land on it see who you are, feel like you’re the best option, and trust you, because they see you and your team doing the actual work. So your conversion rate goes up and your cost per lead goes down. Same ad spend, more calls.
Your blog builds authority
That same content gets turned into a blog post built around the service and the city you’re servicing. It’s optimized, Google loves it, ChatGPT loves it, and it builds you as the authority in your market. Now organic traffic starts showing up without you paying for every single click.
Your Google Business Profile climbs
Then it becomes a Google Business Profile update, and now your map listing, your GBP, your GMB, however you want to call it, is getting ranked higher. Again: organic.
Your Facebook ads follow up
Finally, it feeds your Facebook ads. The people who landed on your page, watched some of your videos, visited your website, clicked an ad but didn’t reach out, now you’re retargeting them. Now they’re seeing you actually doing the job, and they know you’re the one company they want to work with.
It’s an ecosystem, and the entire ecosystem is built around content. Pull the content out, and every one of those pieces gets weaker and more expensive.
Heading Into 2027: Let AI Do the Boring Part
Now you might say, okay, but what about all those other parts? Who builds the landing page, writes the blog post, runs the ads?
Well, guess what. We’re gearing towards 2027 and AI is everywhere, which means AI can do that whole thing: the creation of the landing page, the creation of the blog post, the creation of the Facebook ads. All of it.
That’s exactly what we built. Local Service Mastery started as a coaching program, today it’s an AI machine built around my brain and how I operate. At the end of the day, my strategy is a set of rules. I could execute it myself, but it’s time-consuming, repetitive, and honestly a shitty task nobody wants to do. So the AI follows my exact strategy, my exact rules, and executes it for you. That’s how I can be cycling in Tuscany, Italy while the machine keeps building. And it’s a very different thing from buying generic marketing for contractors, this is a system that runs on a proven playbook.
And here’s the biggest differentiator: it’s a hybrid. I build the automation for you and I teach you what’s going on behind the scenes, so you’re educated, and you never have to rely on me or anyone else ever again.
Your job shrinks down to one thing: create content. Let the AI machine run its course on top of that.
